my DA epiphany

Mood: :meditation: Pensive
Listening to: Faster Kill Pussycat - Paul Oakenfold ft. Brittany Murphy

:pointr: Wow. It's been a long, long, long time since I've posted a journal.

:pointr: I received a soccer scholarship to Canisius College, in Buffalo, New York. Class of 2010. I was even in my city's newspaper for this achievment. Of course, it's not an achievement for me, I don't think I'm that good of a player honestly. Ah well. Away from home sounds good right now.

:pointr: This summer so far has been amazing.. much due to some family being over from Poland. I'm barely ever in the house, going to different places like Niagara Falls and Toronto pretty much everyday. Oh, and soccer season is going well, for me at least, maybe not the team. I have 12goals in 9games. Hooray.

:pointr: Now, the epiphany part of it all. I've been thinking lately.. why do I have a DA account? Well, to have a main account for my club, the-zodiac-club.. and to be an artist. Or at least, reach into myself to find a more creative side. Self-discovery. I have all these photos of myself on my account, but why? Haha, I was an attention whore when I posted those photos [still am, btw]. Buuuut, I have decided to delete all pictures of me submitted to DA. They don't show my creative artistic side..only my creative physical side. Oh, and I don't want others pretending to be beautiful me on myspace or something. Lawl.

:pointr: I will be posting new photos from my cottage soon, I took a few good ones.

Secret On How To Get Everyone To Like You..
Knowing how to give the perfect compliment!
Studies show, genuine compliments make people more willing to help you. People are more likely to remember you. And they'll think of you more highly.

But that doesn't mean you should go around telling everyone they look fabulous – the compliment has to be sincere to be effective. So here's what the experts say about compliments:

•    First, men get a third of the compliments women do. Because people assume men don't need them. So if you praise a man, not only is he more likely to remember you, he'll really appreciate it.

•    Who else doesn't get much praise? The boss. According to communications professor, Dr. Mark Knapp from the University of Texas, studies show that bosses view those who compliment them as more capable at their jobs! So go ahead and tell the boss he did a good job, just make it sincere and not forced. If you're a brown-noser, the boss will see right through it and think you're less capable.

•    Here's one compliment that can't lose: "You crack me up" or "You have a great sense of humor".
Dr. Knapp says everybody wants to think they have a great sense of humor. If you validate that, it'll really resonate and make the person think more highly of you. And here's another reason that's one of the best all-purpose compliments – because you can't be funny without being smart. So it's a double compliment.

•    To make a compliment more memorable – throw in a question. Like, "What a delicious meal – where'd you get the recipe?" That advice comes from the book "How to Start a Conversation and Make Friends".

And here's the only time gossip is good – when you're saying something nice about someone else. When it gets back to them, and it will, it'll be more powerful. We're conditioned to be suspicious of direct compliments. But if it's passed on, it's thought to be more sincere.

Boost Your Brainpower!
-- Bend your mind. Crossword puzzles and brainteasers do more than simply pass the time: They can actually help reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Restak explains that the brain is unique among a body's organs; the liver and kidneys wear down with use, but the brain actually improves the more we activate it. Challenging the brain in any way — with a game of chess or a Dickens novel — will improve cognition.
-- Indulge your ears. Music stimulates brain circuitry, which is why musicians have larger cerebellums than the rest of us. Fortunately, you don't need to play an instrument to build up your brain. "Simply listening to music you enjoy activates parts of the frontal lobes and the limbic cortex on both sides of the brain," Restak explains. During tomorrow's commute, turn off the local shock jock and pop your favorite CD into the car stereo. By the time you get to the office, you'll be calmer — and a bit smarter.
-- Use your hands. Whether you're typing up a report, driving a car or cooking dinner, your hands are constantly doing your brain's bidding. In fact, no part of the body is more closely linked to the brain than the hand. That's why developing nimble finger skills enhances brain function. "When you do something requiring finger dexterity, you're exercising a large part of the brain," explains Restak. "Unfortunately, we live in a society where there is a de-emphasis on mind-finger control. Surgeons have it, but try checking the fine-finger development of a lawyer, an accountant or a public-relations executive." To counter your finger-flimsy lifestyle, take up an old-fashioned hobby that requires fine detail work, such as sewing, crocheting, model-ship building or bike repair.
-- Stand tall. Working out may make you slimmer, but it could also make you smarter. Restak says that standing exercises strengthen the brain's balance and coordination centers, which also improves cognition. He recommends exercises that build leg strength, balance, coordination and flexibility. His favorite: tai chi, an ancient Chinese slow-motion exercise. "It is tremendous for leg strength and balance because you're often standing on one foot," he says.
-- Keep the past alive. Memory loss is one of the most common complaints neurologists hear from people over 40. But you can improve your memory simply by keeping a good record of your past with photo albums, videos, scrapbooks and journals. You may also want to keep some "scent memories" — your mother's perfume, your grandfather's tobacco or the suntan lotion you used as a kid. "Smell is so emotionally evocative because the olfactory nerve is the only sensory channel that links directly to the brain's emotional centers in the limbic system," says Restak. Mementos create connections in the brain that could otherwise be lost, thus literally keeping memories alive.

Doodling does a body good!
Or at least it can give you the energy to overcome any obstacles. Handwriting expert Jane Buckner explains how to master your mood with a squiggle.

* Can't forgive someone? Draw a small heart. Then, draw a bigger heart around it, and another one around that……Keep drawing bigger hearts 'til you run out of paper. How's it work? When you physically make something larger, your brain thinks you want to expand your emotions, too…… It'll help you look outside yourself and be more compassionate.
* What kind of doodles can block your stress? Rows and rows of ocean waves. The rhythmic, repetitive motion of drawing waves lowers your heart rate, slows your breathing, and calms you instantly.
* How about when you feel frazzled and scattered? Draw a row of lower case "I"s, and dot each one carefully. What does this do? It forces you to focus on the details, and helps you concentrate.
* And finally, if you're tired and want a burst of energy, fill a paper full of zigzags. Research shows that drawing repeated zig-zags tells your brain to wake up, and gives it energy to burn.
